On Monday, April 3, 2017, Edmonton International Street Performers Festival’s (StreetFest) Festival Artistic Producer, Shelley Switzer, spoke at a City Council Committee meeting requesting Council’s support of additional funding for the 2018 Festival relocation. The relocation is due to the many projects happening on Sir Winston Churchill Square between September 2017 and the spring of 2019. Two other Festivals affected by this matter also spoke at the meeting, including The Works and Taste of Edmonton.
The amount StreetFest requested is a 30% portion of the anticipated expenses/losses for this temporary move. The festival, with this support from Edmonton City Council, hopes to further leverage the additional dollars required for this temporary move from government and business supporters.
At the April 11th City Council Meeting, this request was approved.
“We are so very grateful with this decision and support from Edmonton City Council. The Edmonton International Street Performers Festival staff and Board of Directors will now meet to determine our required next steps for 2018 plans.” says Shelley Switzer, Festival Artistic Producer. “We have a lot of planning to do prior to the move, but for now we are looking forward to the 2017 Festival!”
The 2017 Edmonton International Street Performers Festival will be held at Sir Winston Churchill Square in downtown Edmonton July 7-16, 2017. With over 40 acts from Canada and around the world and 1500 outdoor performances, Edmonton’s downtown core is magically transformed into the ultimate play zone for the young and old.
